Copyright © 2012 gigi. Visit the original article at http://www.hoyummy.com/2011/12/13/review-de-dutch-pannekoek-house/.

I was recently contacted by De Dutch Pannekoek House about a Facebook promotion they were running in December to have people choose between savoury and sweet items. The incentive for people to participate is that if you like the De Dutch Facebook page and vote, you get a 25% off code to use at De Dutch. In addition, each vote will give you an entry to win a $500 gift card to De Dutch, to be awarded on December 24. I was asked if I’d be interested in checking out De Dutch and blog about their December promotion and since it has been many years since I last dined there, I thought it would be a good idea. I was sent a gift card for $50 and since that was definitely too much for just Jenkins and me to use up for breakfast, we also invited Grick and Snoopy to come along. We decided to meet up at the New Westminster location since it was close by to where we were going later that day.

Snoopy used to be a regular at De Dutch so while we were perusing what to order, she pointed out some of her favourite items to order. Jenkins ordered an orange juice and Snoopy and Grick had coffees (free refills) while we looked at the menu.

To maximize the variety of our brunch, Snoopy and I decided to split a couple of items. I wanted something with meat but wasn’t overly hungry that day (surprisingly) so I decided on the Abby Perogie pannekoek. This pannekoek came with DeBacon, which is like a thinly sliced Canadian bacon, potato, and onion. It was topped with some cheddar cheese and served with sour cream. I’m not a huge perogie fan but I actually liked this pannekoek quite a bit. The potato added some “meatiness” and the bacon added a hint of saltiness. I was afraid initially that there would be too much cheese but the amount here was just right. My pannekoek got cold quite quickly but I think that was due to the fact that it was so thin more than anything else.

Snoopy chose a sweet pannekoek, which worked out really well with my savoury choice. She decided on the pear and maple syrup pannekoek. The pear wasn’t very sweet and I would have liked for it to be a little softer but combined with the maple syrup, it wasn’t too bad. I preferred the Abby Perogie more though.

Jenkins and Grick were a little on the boring side and decided to order the same thing. Their only difference in the Boer’s pannekoek were their eggs and choice of toast. They were originally going to get the Boer’s option on the main pannekoek menu but then saw there was a slightly smaller option which had a smaller pannekoek and sausage slices instead of links so they decided to order this smaller version instead. Jenkins’ eggs were slightly overcooked and he noted that the hash browns were a bit bland but he liked the pannekoek after he added some maple syrup to it. I sampled one of the sausage slices and I found it to be pretty juicy and flavourful.

We had a pretty good time at De Dutch Pannekoek House. The service got a bit slow at times when the restaurant started to fill up but in general, they were quite good about keeping our drinks topped up and making sure we had everything we needed. I asked Krista today what she thought of De Dutch since she had lived in Holland for a few years. Although it sounds like De Dutch is nowhere near authentic according to what she tells me, I still enjoyed what we ordered there. Krista did note that she had not been back to De Dutch for several years so perhaps they improved over her previous experience.

If you recall, there was a group buy deal for brunch at Yew quite a few months back but it doesn’t expire until November. I had bought a coupon with the intention of using it up with Snoopy, who had also bought one. After some wrangling around dates, we were finally able to meet up for brunch one afternoon with Jenkins and Grick in tow.

If you are unfamiliar with brunch at Yew, for $27, you get a three-course brunch by choosing from their menu. You also have the option of ordering a la carte but these three-course option seems to be pretty popular with most people. With our coupon, we actually got two three-course menus for $27 so as you can imagine, this was quite a fabulous deal.

After determining our orders, we were presented with a small dish of freshly fried cinnamon sugar doughnuts. The doughnuts were warm and crispy on the outside and not too cakey, which I liked. There was some accompanying jam that you could dip the doughnuts in but I really didn’t find this necessary since the doughnuts tasted great on their own.

For my first course, I decided on the waffles, which came with a drak chocolate and orange flower cream spread. The waffles were perfectly made, being very light yet crispy. The cream spread had a ton of chocolate flavour and although the orange was also quite strong, I didn’t find it to be overbearing.

Jenkins ordered the rum raisin French toast, which came with caramelized apples and pecans. Although this sounded interesting on paper, Jenkins found that it actually tasted quite plain and said he liked my waffles more.

Snoopy decided on the lemon ricotta pancakes, which came with raspberries and white chocolate mascarpone. We are both huge lemon fans and I really liked the bright lemon flavour exhibited in these pancakes. The raspberries added some additional tanginess, which I liked but I couldn’t taste too much white chocolate in the mascarpone. That didn’t bother me though since I thought the lemon and raspberries already tasted great.

Value-wise, Grick probably got the best deal for his first course, since he went with the calamari, which was one of the more expensive appetizer options. However, us other three were trying to be (relatively) healthy that day and didn’t want to eat too much deep fried food. I have to say that the calamari was delicious though. It was nicely fried and the calamari itself was cooked just right and didn’t have the chewy texture that can sometimes come with overcooking. The chili lime aioli for dipping could have been more spicy but was still a nice accompaniment.

For my main course, I decided on the steak and eggs. My flat iron steak came rare, which I had ordered but in hindsight medium rare may have been better because my steak was a little tough and chewy. I don’t think ordering it medium rare would have helped too much since the problem seemed to be with the cut of the steak but who knows. The poached egg came with hollandaise sauce and I would have liked for the hollandaise sauce to be slightly creamier. My favourite part of this dish was actually my grilled tomato and the potatoes, which I dipped liberally into my hollandaise and poached egg yolks.

For the mains, I think Snoopy ordered the winner at our table. The burger came with a BC blueberry and balsamic ketchup, aged white cheddar, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. It was a massive burger and Snoopy was only able to finish half…which was fine because that meant Grick and I each got a quarter. The burger was very juicy and the meat was very moist. The blueberry and balsamic ketchup provided an interesting tanginess to the burger and adding bacon and mushrooms to a burger just makes good sense.

Jenkins chose the daily special for his main, which was a pan-seared halibut which peas, corn, and fingerling potatoes. He noted that his fish was pretty boring and was slightly overcooked. In hindsight, he probably should have ordered something else but he was trying quite hard to be healthy that day.

For dessert, we all opted for the tapa trio, which allowed us to each choose three small desserts. Since there were four of us, we were able to order basically the whole menu. I’m not going to go through all the desserts but my overall impression was that the tapas desserts we tried were mostly on the “too sweet” spectrum of my desserts preference. That being said, there were a few that we did like, which included the chocolate hazelnut candybar (bottom left). This was actually the favourite dessert item for all four of us. Dark chocolate and hazelnuts always make a good pairing and the chocolate was very light with a mousse-like texture. I also liked the pineapple shooter (bottom centre) which was very refreshing and a nice light way to end your meal. I wasn’t a huge fan of the trifle (bottom right) though but then again, I’m not a trifle fan in general.

I had the cake sticks (bottom centre) before and similar to the last time, I found them to be too candy sweet so it wasn’t my cup of tea. I had thought I would like the dessert on the right, which I believe was a pot de creme with caramel on top but I also found that dish to be too sweet.

Despite some misses, the brunch at Yew is a pretty good deal, especially if you’re considering the fact that you’re eating in a nice hotel and the service is quite impeccable. I noticed that it seemed to be a very popular dining destination for many families that Sunday afternoon and I think it’s something my parents would enjoy for a birthday or Mother’s Day-type occasion. Hopefully, this post will at least help you weed out what not to order.

It looked like Hollywood Cafe had some pretty good reviews and it was conveniently located a few blocks from the wharf so we decided to check it out. Even though we were there on a weekday, it was pretty full so I can only imagine how busy it would be on a weekend.

First, I started out with some grapefruit juice.

Both of our orders also came with bread so that came first. I went for sourdough while Jenkins was slightly healthier with multigrain.

There were actually several good options in Hollywood Cafe’s extensive brunch menu that I was interested in trying out but I decided to go for something that wasn’t available in the Vancouver brunch places that I frequent. I forgot to note down the exact name of what I ordered but it was a California scramble that was almost like a blended omelette that had bacon, tomatoes, and avocado in my scrambled egg. It came on top of a crunchy hash brown that provided a nice crunch to my otherwise creamy egg dish. I liked the additional substance and flavour provided by the avocado and this was quite a heavy but satisfying breakfast.

Jenkins had something similar to mine but his was slightly spicy with the addition of chorizo sausage. It’s too bad that I can’t remember the names of these dishes as they both look quite similar I would have to say that taste wise, they were fairly similar as well but it’s definitely a dish I would recommend if you do come here. There was also an option to switch out the hash browns for fruit for $1 extra but I think the extra crunch from the hash browns really add to the overall dish although it wouldn’t be as healthy as the fruit.

Service is super friendly here and we could tell that there were a lot of regulars at this place. Most brunch options are very reasonably priced and I’d be quite pleased if some place similar opened up in Vancouver.

Even though it’s been quite a while since my last dinner at Milestone’s, I must say that I’ve always enjoyed their brunches. The value has always been fairly good, given the quality of food and portion size and I definitely prefer it to their lunches and dinners. While trying to figure out where we should go for brunch one day, I suggested that we check out the Milestone’s in Yaletown since it had been quite a while since our last meal there and it was a convenient location for us.

I already knew what to order before I even entered the restaurant. The last time I was there, I had tried the prime rib hash, which turned out to be really tasty so I really wanted to order it again. As you can see below, the portion was huge and I ended up eating only half. The BBQ sauce provided some tanginess to the hash, which was offset by the creaminess of the poached egg and hollandaise sauce. I also liked the crunch of the corn and the crispy fried potatoes. I do like my hash to be on the crispier side and if you don’t like it that way, the hash may not appeal to you.

Jenkins had the Milestones’ Famous Big Breakfast, which came with standard fare such as double-smoked bacon, ham, andouille sausage, scrambled eggs, French toast, roasted potatoes, and fruit. As you can see, the portion size for this was also huge but since Jenkins was hungry that day, he managed to finish everything. The roasted potatoes were crispy and the salsa on top actually went quite well with the potatoes. The bacon was slightly greasy but the ham and sausage provided more than enough meat. I wasn’t too impressed with the French toast, which I found lacked flavour and I would have liked the outside to be slightly crispier.

Jenkins and I quite enjoyed our brunch at Milestone’s. Most of their offerings are pretty standard although they do try to come up with some interesting dishes such as the prime rib hash. The portions are more than enough to feed a fairly hungry person and I find their quality is always predictable, which I like. Note that this applies to brunch only though since I rarely (if ever) go there for dinner.

We didn’t have to wait long before they let us inside and we ended up snagging a nice table right by the window.

After we ordered some French press coffee, Jenkins and I quickly discussed what we should order.

My apologies for this somewhat ravaged looking picture but I was in such a hurry to eat, I didn’t realize that I forgot to take a picture until I finished half my dish! Yikes! It may be a bit difficult to tell from the picture but I had the Eggs Benny with Chorizo. The eggs were perfectly poached and runny, resting on top of some brioche and generously doused in Hollandaise sauce. The chorizo was only cut in half rather than sliced in small pieces so it was actually quite juicy and added a hint of spiciness to the rich eggs and sauce. Accompanying the eggs was some sauteed spinach, rosti (potato patties), and baked beans. The rosti were slightly burnt but I didn’t mind because I liked the additional roasted flavour that provided. The spinach and beans were actually quite heavy so I only ended up picking at them because I was pretty full from my eggs benny and the pieces of French toast that Jenkins gave me.

Jenking chose the French Toast, which was another pretty decadent dish as the toast was actually brioche and it was stuffed with bananas. In addition, you can also see in the picture below that there was a healthy dollop of maple syrup whipped cream. Jenkins isn’t a huge fan of whipped cream in general so he brushed most of it aside but I can vouch for its tastiness. The brioche was nice and crispy on the outside and the banana stuffing inside added a nice layer of flavour.

All of Twisted Fork’s brunch items cost $11 and I think this was pretty reasonable for what we got, both in terms of quality and quantity. Jenkins and I walked away quite full and satisfied with what we ordered. I liked how all of the brunch items on the menus put a unique spin on traditional items and there are definitely other items that piqued my interest. Service was friendly and prompt although there was a bit of a wait for our food. We didn’t really mind though because I think all the orders went from other customers went in at the same time and our server was really good about making sure our waters and coffees were topped up.

Copyright © 2012 gigi. Visit the original article at http://www.hoyummy.com/2010/07/06/vancouver-foodie-tour-part-1/.

A couple of weeks ago, Michelle Ng, founder of Foodie Tour, invited me attend the Granville Foodie Tour. I had heard about food tours in other cities so I thought it was a great idea that something similar had finally started up in Vancouver. From what I understand, Michelle started the Foodie Tour a little while back but I was attending a media launch that she had organized. Foodie Tour currently has organized restaurant tours that concentrate on Granville Street downtown, Downtown in general, and Richmond. Originally, I was under the impression that we were going to four or five restaurants during the two hour duration of the tour. So I was pretty surprised when I arrived at our first destination and found out we were actually going to seven locations!

Our first stop and initial meeting location was at Twisted Fork on Granville Street. Twisted Fork was actually on my list of places I wanted to check out because Sherman had recommended it to me a while back. We were served a couple of items on toast. First was a cured duck breast on brioche crouton. The duck went quite well with the sweet jam (I think blueberry?) and the green bean on top provided a nice crunch. The other appie I sampled was a roasted beet, grilled pear, goat cheese, and arugula on a baguette crouton. I This was a classic combination of ingredients and the slight sweetness from the pear and beet went nicely with the creamy tartness of the goat cheese.

Our dessert tasting was a frozen chocolate terrine with house-made raspberry sorbet and fresh wild mint. The dessert sampling was just enough to leave me wanting more…I should have grabbed a second sample! The chocolate flavour was very rich and the raspberry cut the richness of the terrine. I would be a happy camper if I had a full-sized version of this dessert.

I was too engrossed in the tasty treats to hear what this drink was, but it tasted like a strawberry mojito. In any case, it was quite a refreshing drink on a sunny day.

We were rushed out of Twisted Fork after what seemed like only a short period of time and walked briskly to our next stop, The Refinery.

We were treated to a combo meal made by the staff at The Refinery and Sip Resto Lounge, which was located downstairs from The Refinery. Our drink here was The Refinery’s twist on ginger beer, which was made with their house-made bitters. It was full of great ginger flavour, which really gave this drink a nice kick.

To go with our drink, we were served Sip Resto’s take on eggs benny, the Southwest Kickass Benny. A deep-fried poached egg was perched on top of cornbread with chorizo, jalapenos, and a drizzling of BBQ sauce and hollandaise. The poached egg was crispy on the outside and softly poached on the inside and the chorizo and jalapeno gave the eggs benny a nice kick. This turned out to be one of my favourite dishes of the tour and my only complaint was that the cornbread was too crumbly. Sherman noted that this may have gone better with a brioche, which I think may have worked.

Our next stop was at The Edge Social Grille, a place I didn’t even know existed. One thing I liked about the Foodie Tour was that it exposed me to a bunch of new restaurants, some I had never heard of and others that I had wanted to try for quite a while.

We had quite a selection of treats at The Edge. I sampled a couple of flat breads, one with beef tenderloin and blue cheese and another with smoked salmon and goat cheese. I preferred the beef tenderloin version more but both were tasty. The bread was still crispy and the blue cheese actually enhanced the flavour of the beef. The grilled vegetable gazpacho was pretty run of the mill but was a nice refreshing soup for a sunny day. My favourite item at The Edge was definitely the Chocolate and Van Gogh Espresso Vodka Truffles though. The truffles were quite soft and had a lot of great chocolate flavour to it. I couldn’t totally taste the vodka but I still really enjoyed the flavour and consistency of the truffles.

Along with all these treats, we were served some white sangria. This was another delicious and refreshing drink for a sunny day and I liked how they loaded the sangria with a lot of fruit.

Our next stop was the Granville Room.

First, we were served a glass of their Mr. Pink, which was vodka with muddled watermelon, mint syrup, and lime juice. This was one of my favourite drinks on the tour and definitely a great drink to have while hanging out on a patio on a sunny day.

We were also served some sesame crusted tuna with some salsa on top of some multi-grain crisps. I’m not sure if these had been prepared quite a bit in advanced but the crisps were soggy by the time we arrived. The sesame also didn’t appear to be toasted, which made these nibbles a bit lacklustre.

By this point, I was starting to get full so I was quite glad we were walking from location to location, which gave us a slight opportunity to walk off all the food we were eating. With three more locations to go, I was suddenly starting to wonder if I would even have an appetite for dinner later that evening…

I should note before I sign off in today’s post that attending this event gave me a great opportunity to meet a bunch of really cool people, from writers for the West Ender and Georgia Straight to other bloggers, including Mijune and Karra!

…to be continued in my next post!

We had gone on a road trip to Portland last year and had a lot of fun shopping and eating so we thought we’d make a return trip this year. I was pretty busy with work in the days leading up to our trip but I was able to make some time checking out which restaurants I’d want to visit this time around. Luckily, I was able to rely on the advice of friends to help me out. Sherman highly recommended that I try out Cafe du Berry and so I decided to put that on my brunch list.

Luckily for Jenkins and me, it was on our way to the Woodburn outlets. I also knew that Cafe du Berry tended to get quite busy but it was a weekday so we did not even have to wait for a table. While we were trying to figure out what we wanted to eat, we started by ordering some freshly squeezed juice. Jenkins went for his standard of orange juice while I decided to give the raspberry crab apple juice a try. I suppose due to the addition of the apple, the juice was quite thick and the sweetness of the apple made the raspberry less sour. The cup of juice was smaller than I expected but it was very tasty.

I had quite a tough time figuring out what I wanted to eat but I finally settled on ordering the French toast, which was promoted in the menu as a house special. The French toast was light and fluffy and the egg gave the toast an almost custard-like consistency. It was just sweet enough and was a great brunch item, especially if you’re not looking for something savoury. The hash browns were also very creamy and fluffy, unlike a traditional hash brown. I suspect there was quite a bit of butter in this, which was why it had such a smooth consistency, but I really enjoyed it and it filled me up quite quickly.

Since m y French toast did not come with meat, I ordered a homemade sausage that I ended up sharing with Jenkins. The sausage had a nice combo of spices and was not overly fat but still had a nice bite to it. Some people may find the sausage to be a bit on the overcooked side but I didn’t mind it.

Jenkins wanted something with protein so he ordered the Spanish Omelette, which came with some tomatoes and onions. The egg had a nice and fluffy consistency and the tomato & egg combo was almost like a salsa. Jenkins enjoyed his omelette but noted that my French toast was better.

Jenkins and I quite enjoyed our meal at Cafe du Berry. The food was tasty although I wouldn’t say it was really French style even though the signs noted it was a French country restaurant. It took quite a while for the food to come but Jenkins and I passed the time by chatting with the very friendly owner who recommended a fantastic bakery to us (coming in a later post). We were also encouraged to go back for dinner but since we were only in Portland for a short period of time, we didn’t have the opportunity to go back.

Copyright © 2012 gigi. Visit the original article at http://www.hoyummy.com/2010/01/25/review-brunch-at-provence-marinaside/.

I just realised that I have been going out to brunch quite a lot lately, but what can I say, it is one of my favourite meals! Karen and I hadn’t met up in quite a few months and brunch always seems to work out well for us as that’s when we usually have our catch up sessions. Karen left the location choice to me and I decided on Provence Marinaside because I had heard that their French toasted baguettes were on the 2009 Vancouver list of the best things to eat in Vancouver Magazine.

Provence Marinaside doesn’t take reservations for small parties for brunch because they are almost always packed during brunch hours on the weekends. Luckily for us, we did not have to wait for a table and were seated at a small table with big comfy couches.

I decided to stray from my usual black/green tea choices that day and went for a Mountain Berry tea. The tea was slightly tangy from the berry infusion and went really well with a small dab of honey.

I knew what I was going to have before I even entered the restaurant and was prepared to immediately order the French toasted baguettes. Our server told me that I had the option of adding a strawberry compote to the dish but said she preferred it on its own with some whipped cream and maple syrup. I decided to heed her advice and passed on the compote.

The baguettes turned out to be much more filling that I expected. They were sugary and crispy on the outside and the baguettes themselves appeared to be stuffed with a light custard filling. I really enjoyed this twist on traditional French toast and since it was already sweet from the brown sugar crust, I only dipped the toast in a little bit of the maple syrup. If you like sweet things for brunch, this is definitely something for you to try.

Karen decided to have the Croque Monsieur Eggs Benny. Instead of an english muffin, it was served on a slice of toast and there was some Black Forest ham and mozarella cheese to make this Croque Monsieur-ish. The eggs were poached just right and the Hollandaise sauce along with the cheese made this quite a rich dish but the flavours all went quite well together.

It had been quite some time since my last visit (brunch or otherwise) to Provence Marinaside and I’m glad to report that their brunch is still quite tasty. It has quite a bustling atmosphere in the mornings and is a fun place to meet up with friends. I’m not sure how often they rotate their brunch options but the items we had were definitely things that I wouldn’t mind trying again.

Copyright © 2012 gigi. Visit the original article at http://www.hoyummy.com/2010/01/21/review-cucumber-cafe/.

It had been quite a while since I last met up with Miguel. We were always busy and since we were trying to coordinate a lunch or dinner with several other people at the same time, it was difficult to find a time that worked for all of us. Finally, we found a brunch time that worked for us and Miguel suggested going to Cucumber Cafe in Richmond.

I decided to start with some tea since it was a cold and rainy morning. The receptacle that my tea came in was pretty interesting: when you place the orange container holding the tea on the cup, it pushes up on the bottom of the receptacle and the tea flows out from the bottom directly into the cup. I thought it was pretty cool until I had a bit of an equipment malfunction and tea started pouring all over the table. Miguel blames it on user error but I’m still not convinced it was my fault.

Jenkins and I decided to order two separate dishes and split them so we could try more of the menu. I decided to go with the shredded chicken club, which came with bacon, lettuce, and a spicy mayo. The sandwich was really hard to eat because the chicken kept on falling out every time I picked up my sandwich. Also, the bread was soggy, which did not add to my overall enjoyment. I actually felt the best part of this dish was the side salad, which was dressed in an Asian-style dressing and had nuts, feta cheese, and cranberries.

Jenkins decided to have the sunrise panini. Similar to my gripe about the chicken sandwich, the panini bread was soggy when it arrived, likely due to water from the tomatoes. The egg was a bit overcooked and both Jenkins and I felt that there was too much cheese, making the panini too heavy.

I was a bit disappointed with my brunch at Cucumber Cafe although it was nice to catch up with Miguel and some others that I hadn’t seen in a while. It did seem fairly busy when we left the restaurant though so perhaps we either ordered the wrong items or it was a bad day. In any case, it may be a while before I venture here again.

Similar to what we experienced at La Bocca, a lot of our original brunch choices do not take reservations. We could have woken up a bit earlier to ensure we didn’t have to line up but since we were up late the night before, this option didn’t really appeal to us. We decided to have brunch at the Dubh Linn Gate, which is in the Pan Pacific Whistler hotel in the village, because it seemed fairly empty and could accommodate our group.

We ended up sitting outside because it was a fairly nice day and we could also do some people watching. I had some trouble deciding on what to eat so I ordered a tea to by myself a little more time.

I decided to go with my brunch stand by of a classic eggs benny. The eggs benny themselves were pretty lacklustre. I found the Hollandaise sauce to be on the watery side but I wonder if this actually means it is healthier than the usual creamier Hollandaise sauce. I enjoyed mini hash potato patties but they were a bit cold, perhaps because we were sitting outside? They were seasoned with some type of seasoning salt and were quite tasty.

In general, there was not a lot of an Irish twist on any of the brunch items, but perhaps this is because brunch is not their main specialty. The brunch fare here is pretty predictable, from eggs benny to pancakes to sausage/eggs/toast. Service was a bit absent even though it appeared to be a slow morning. Other than the prime location right in central Whistler Village, I was not too impressed with Dubh Linn Gate, at least for brunch.
