Herman - I bought a small jar of the paste (not sure if that's what you got too...I think it was the only option available when I was there). You're right though...I put in 6 tablespoons and I found the ice cream consistency to be too "thick". Flavourwise, it was ok though. My next time around, I may play around with the amount of paste and perhaps add some more milk or cream to balance it out.

I just tried this recipe, got the black sesame paste from Fujiya as well (thx for the tips!). Tried putting 3 table spoons of paste it already got really dark in color also had a very strong sesame taste to it. Wouldn't 6 table spoons (90ml) of paste be a little too much? Just wondering. Perhaps it was the brand that I got being too "dense" or strong. Anyway awesome recipe, it's really delicious!

Christina - I tried putting in extra black sesame paste and although I got the colour right, the texture was too "thick" for my liking! Oh well. I guess we'll just have to keep on trying :)

I too have tried to make this ice cream as black as I have had it restaurants, but it seems impossible! Also, every picture that I have seen of midnight black goma ice cream has been either served in a restaurant or ice cream parlour - I have yet to find one that colour that is homemade..I am starting to believe that perhaps it is artificially coloured..
