Review: Shanghai Wonderful

by gigi on December 6, 2007

Wow, I’ve really been on a Shanghainese food eating binge lately! :) Christina, Sashi, Mabel, and I hopped over to Shanghai Wonderful one evening for a nice dinner. We had all heard so much about this place in the days leading up and couldn’t wait to start ordering so the food would start coming! Shanghai Wonderful is located at 8380 Lansdowne Rd in Richmond.

Everything on the menu looked so good that it was too bad there were only four of us! It was hard to limit ourselves and not order everything. :) We started with a cold dish of chicken with peanut or sesame sauce and cucumbers. The noodles had a nice consistency to them although the dish was a bit watery, perhaps from the chicken? I’m not too sure…

The Shanghai pork soup dumplings were very tasty here. Like always, it is hard to resist biting into the dumplings before it cools down! I almost always burn my tongue. The skin was not too thick and paired well with the warm pork and soup inside.

We also had the braised pork belly.  At Shanghai Wonderful, the veggies that came with this dish were pea sprouts, which I preferred over the usual spinach.  The gravy was a little bit sweet and the pork belly did not feel too fatty at all.

To go with the braised pork and the other dishes (especially the ones with gravy!), we ordered a fried bun…

…and a steamed one.  Although I always prefer the fried version of this bun, the steamed one was not bad and was more healthy.  :)

We also got one of Sashi’s favourite items, the green beans with minced pork, garlic, and chillis.  The beans were fresh and crunchy.

Christina requested the Shanghai fried noodles.  These thick noodles are stir-fried with spinach and pork.  I normally find this dish too greasy but this one was very tasty and not very greasy at all.  The portion size was also very generous.

We also ordered the smoked duck with mini buns.  In terms of smoked flavour, I couldn’t really taste it but the duck was layered with a taro paste which was very tasty.  Combine this with the mini buns and hoisin sauce and you’ve got yourself a mini duck sandwich.  :)

I really enjoyed my experience at Shanghai Wonderful.  I was afraid it would fall short of expectations because I had heard so many great things about it and was afraid it would be hyped up.  I especially liked how they made small variations in the usual and traditional dishes, which kept things interesting.  :)
