Review: Pine House Bakery

Christina, Mabel, and I wandered over to the Pine House Bakery at 3396 Kingsway the other day for an afternoon snack. Pine House Bakery is a chain of Chinese-style bakeries offering a variety of buns, cakes, pastries, and cookies.

I decided on a few pastries. :) I picked a BBQ pork pastry, a small walnut cookie, and an egg tart.

The egg tart was fresh from the oven and was still warm. The crust was light and flakey and the egg custard was light and sweet. The best way to eat egg tarts is always when it is fresh and warm. One tip about recreating the fresh from the oven taste: I warm them up in the toaster oven for about a minute…yum!

The walnut cookie was not as good. I found the dough to be a bit heavy and the cookie was still a bit cold from being stored in the refrigerated display counter. The next time I get this, I may pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds. As you can probably see, I have a thing about warm pastries and cookies. :)

I was most unimpressed with the BBQ pork pastry. This was a flaky pastry with BBQ pork inside. There was way too much pastry and not enough pork! The pastry part was also a bit soggy from having been stored in the refrigerated counter for too long.

The total cost of the three pastries was $1.75…an unbelievable deal! I would definitely get the egg tarts again although I am not so sure about the BBQ pork pastry or the walnut cookie. That being said, they have a variety of other items that I will want to try the next time I am there.
