Review: Prince Chinese Seafood Restaurant

It was my grandma’s birthday last week so we all headed to the Prince Chinese Seafood Restaurant at the corner of Grandview Highway & Rupert St to celebrate (2881 Grandview Highway to be exact). I had been here a couple of times already and the food has always been pretty good. We decided to go with a set banquet dinner option.

First off was the cold plate appetizer. This came with smoked salmon, jellyfish, duck feet, braised beef, and pork hock. The items in this dish was pretty standard but everything was very tasty.

Next, we had a dish with stir-fried broccoli and scallops on top of round tofu patties. The tofu was silky smooth and went great with the scallops.

Another veggie dish came next. The baby bok choy, green onions, and celery was stir-fried with crunchy prawns, squid, and mushrooms. I’m not a big fan of celery because I find its flavour too overwelming, but this time, it wasn’t too bad.

The shark fin soup came next. I always like to drizzle a little bit of red vinegar in mine.

The lobster and crab was also quite good. It came in a creamy sauce that would have gone great with some noodles. :) I managed to eat a couple of pieces of lobster and crab without getting my fingers too dirty.

The bok choy came with abalone mushrooms. Some people were actually fooled for a few minutes and thought the mushrooms were real abalone!

The next dish was something new for me. The same type of fish was served both stir-fried and deep-fried with veggies. The deep-fried fish was light and crispy on the outside and inside was very moist.

The crispy fried chicken with prawn chips is always one of my favourites.

Yee mein noodles with mushrooms is also one of my favourites. Sometimes, I wish they served this at the beginning so that I can eat more before I get too full. :)

The red bean soup was actually served with some black glutinous rice and was better than most other restaurants.

Because it was my grandma’s birthday, my uncle always buys birthday buns. If you have never heard of these before, they are peach-shaped buns with lotus past inside.

The place where my uncle buys them packs all these small buns into a bigger shaped hollow bun. It’s actually pretty funny to see all the mini-sized buns packed under the bigger bun. :)

In all, the dinner was very enjoyable. Despite it being a weekday evening, the restaurant was quite busy and was almost full. I have also heard that its dim sum lunches are very tasty and busy as well. The one bad thing about the evening was that I was extremely thirsty afterwards, suggesting that the restaurant may have been a bit heavy handed with the MSG.
